Co-founder of Decatur Healing Arts,
Corinne Chaves, doesn't have to tell you practicing daily meditation or
the ancient moves of Qi Gong have brought her emotional and physical well
being. Her youthful face, graceful movements and calm demeanor say it for
her.
Four years ago Chaves and her husband,
Jude Hasken, a Tai Chi instructor, decided they wanted to help others find
their own healing powers. Today in a studio located in East Decatur
Station, the couple and other practitioners teach Yoga, Tai Chi, Qi Gong
and meditation. "These are all tools for improving and changing health,"
says Chaves. "We just help people find their own paths."
"Illness is the result of blockage and a
decrease of energy," says Chaves. Qi Gong, which means essential energy
work, involves individual gentle movements coordinated with breath and
visualization. A person practicing Qi Gong clears blockages and reverses
impediments to health.
Tai Chi, which means Supreme Ultimate,
is viewed by the Chinese as the highest form of physical practice and has
significant impact on health and longevity. Each Tai Chi form is composed
of a series of movements that flow from one to the next.
Both Tai Chi and Qi Gong are moving
meditations that increase strength from the inside out. Regular practice
in as little as 30 minutes a day can reduce blood pressure, increase
immune function and mental alertness, improve sleeping pat- terns, joint
flexibility, and increase strength and endurance. "I have a friend who has
Lupus," says Chaves. "When she practices regularly her symptoms are
dramatically reduced."

"It doesn't matter how old or how
unhealthy you are," says Chaves. "As long as you are breathing, Qi Gong
can help." Chaves, who was diagnosed with hypothyroid, credits her
practice of Qi Gong for curing her condition and is now medication free.
Although Chaves began studying Yoga in
1973, she first taught math and computer science at the University of Memphis and then worked as a corporate technology consultant for 19 years. In
2002, she met Master Yun Xiang Tseng, fondly known as Master Chen, who
began studying Taoist healing at the age of six. After 10 years of
training, Chen began teaching, and to date has taught thousands in China
and in the U.S.
"This is about bringing healing tools to
people," says Chaves. "When we take responsibility for our own health and
take back control, we create balance. If everyone did this, it would be a
much happier place.”
